A mime of 12 years, SMJ began training at the School for Youth Mime Theatre at Kenyon College in 2007. Throughout their tenure at the School ending in 2013, SMJ was taught by Rick Wamer, Stephen Chipps, Lorie Heald, Dan Griffiths, Danielle Conover, Susan Wang, and Mike Wang.
Once they moved to New York City, SMJ began taking classes with world-renowned mime Gregg Goldston.
SMJ describes themselves as “The World’s Loudest Mime” blending spoken text and sound effects with modern dance and high-impact clowning. SMJ is currently developing their first solo mime show entitled A Body of Contradictions in addition to their first ensemble mime show At the Barre.
SMJ has performed in numerous locations across Ohio, New York, and Connecticut including Otterbein University, the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, Theater 54, WorkShop Theaters, Kenyon College, Cardington Street Fair, Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival, Ohio Expo Center, the Public Libraries of Knox County, among others.
SMJ is currently using their mime training for coaching numerous theatermakers at all levels from middle school, high school, community theater, colleges, and professional in Ohio, New York, and Connecticut.
Some of SMJ’s favorite coaching gigs have been Carrie the Musical for the Ohio Educational Theatre Association, Invention of Theater (World Premiere) for Otterbein Summer Theatre, The Yellow Boat for Otterbein University, teaching Theatermakers 2018 at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, and any gig with Westerville South High School.
