Originally from Mount Vernon, Ohio, SMJ (Steven Meeker Jr.) graduated Summa Cum Laude with Distinction and Department Honors from Otterbein University with a BFA in Acting and a Minor in Dance in April 2017. Since graduating, SMJ is based out of New York and Ohio as a playwright, educator, mime, and theatermaker. Their work has been seen at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, the Ohio Thespians for the Educational Theatre Association, Otterbein University, the School for Mime Theatre at Kenyon College, the Access Theater, the Dragon’s Egg Studio, and various theaters throughout New York City and Ohio.
Recently, SMJ was a National Theater Institute Apprentice for the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center for the 2017-2018 school year as well as the Theatermakers Assistant for the National Theater Institute for the Summer of 2018. In addition to these positions, SMJ taught a handful of mime classes to students ages 19-26.
As a writer, SMJ is working on The Command Center Outside Angel Grove, California, an ensemble play about the first female Power Rangers team with director Esther M. Cohen and producer Jordan Donica as well as a pilot version of the script. In addition, SMJ is developing a new mime musical At the Barre with composer Sarah Flaim. Recently, SMJ just started a new play called To Those Who Feel Stuck in Their Hometown about small town culture and people baking ashes into cookies.
Returning to Ohio for the beginning of 2019, SMJ is engaged in numerous projects including choreographing Carrie the Musical for the 2019 All-Ohio Show for the Ohio Thespians, serving as a dramaturg for Singin’ in the Rain for Otterbein University, directing Matthew Gittins’ new musical You Go On, and movement coaching for Westerville South High School and Highland High School.
